Stock valuation: what your stock is worth

To see what your stock is worth on a date, open Stock summary with the report type Stock valuation (summary). The total of its Balance value is your closing stock, and it should match the balance sheet.

Where to get the value

Open Stock summary and set Report type to Stock valuation (summary) (Stock summary). Set the To date (the date you want the value on), and the Branch. Each line shows:

ColumnMeaning
Product, Unit, Product categoryThe product
WarehouseWhen you group by Store: the warehouse of that line
Balance QTYThe quantity on hand on the date
RateThe average cost of what is left
Balance valueThe value of what is left, first in, first out (How stock is valued and what a sale costs)

The Balance value column added up is the value of your stock on that date. For the value of one warehouse, open the Warehouse page: Total product value (Reading stock by warehouse).

Does it match the books?

The total should equal the closing stock that the Profit and Loss and the Balance Sheet show with Include closing stock, for the same branch and date (Closing stock in the profit and loss, the balance sheet and the year end).

If it differsCheck
The report datesThe To date of this report and the As at date of the other
The branchThe branch filter of each
The year closingThe closing stock saved by the year closing leaves stock transfers out, so after a transfer valued away from its cost, or with goods on the road between branches, that saved figure differs from this report (Closing stock in the profit and loss, the balance sheet and the year end)
ServicesServices are left out of both
Values out of dateOpen Stock summary first, then the profit and loss

Common questions

The value is zero but we have stock.

The stock was brought in with a rate of 0 (an opening, an adjustment or a purchase at no cost), or the warehouse is empty. Check the rate on the entries in Stock ledger details (Stock ledger details).

The value is negative.

More went out of that warehouse than came in by the date of the report: a sale dated before its purchase, or a purchase that was never entered (Negative stock: where Penahak checks it).

The rate of a product keeps changing.

The rate is the average cost of what is left: it changes with every purchase and every sale.
