Bundling and unbundling products

Bundling turns several products into one composite product (a gift box, a kit). Unbundling breaks a product or a composite back into parts. Each is a stock adjustment: the parts go out, the new product comes in, and nothing is posted to the ledgers.

Two kinds of product to bundle

A composite product is a product made of other products. You define it once in Product settings > Composite product: its name, category, unit and rates, and under Associate items the products it is made of with the quantity of each.

Many companies also break one product into another without a recipe: a carton into pieces. That uses Unbundling applicable on the product (Units and alternative units).

The Bundle/unbundle screen

Open Bundle/unbundle (menu Product bundling/unbundling, usual label). It has three tabs:

TabWhat it does to stock
BundlingThe associate items go out, the composite product comes in
Local unbundlingThe composite product goes out, its associate items come in
UnbundlingA product goes out and a different New product comes in (carton to pieces)

  2. Choose the composite product, the warehouse and the date
    What changes
Composite product, Warehouse, Bundling date. The associate items appear with QTY required, Total quantity required and Balance QTY in the warehouse.
  3. Enter QTY to bundle
    What changes
The total quantity of each part is worked out. If any part is short: "Available stock is not sufficient to bundle the product."
  4. Save
    What changes
"Product bundling saved successfully." The parts leave the warehouse and the bundles come in.

Local unbundling and unbundling work the same way in reverse. Unbundling asks for the New product, New product QTY, New product buy rate (Stock rate) and New product sales rate; both stock rates must be above zero: "Stock rate of product going to unbundle could not be zero or less then zero." and "Stock rate of product going to create could not be zero or less then zero." Local unbundling says "Stock not available" when the composite is not in stock.

What it does to the value of stock

The parts go out at their cost, but the new product comes in at the Buy rate on its product page (or the rate you type). When that is not the cost of the parts, the total value of stock changes by the difference. Keep the composite product's Buy rate equal to the cost of its parts, and use the Stock rate the screen proposes for unbundling (How stock is valued and what a sale costs).

Edit and delete

A bundling is a stock adjustment, so editing and deleting follow the same rules (Edit, delete and approve a transfer or an adjustment).

Common questions

"Available stock is not sufficient to bundle the product."

A part is short in the warehouse you chose. Receive or transfer it first, or bundle fewer.

The stock value changed after bundling.

The bundle came in at its Buy rate and the parts left at their cost. Set the composite's Buy rate to the cost of its parts.

I sold a bundle, but the parts are still in stock.

The parts left when you bundled. If you sold without bundling first, the sale took the composite product out, not the parts.

There is no Add button.

No stock adjustment numbering series covers today (Set up stock: a checklist).
