What it is
A recurring invoice is a template for a bill you raise again and again: a monthly rent, a service contract, a yearly licence. You set it up once. Invoices are then made from it automatically, on its schedule, each one a normal sales invoice with its own number.
Open Recurring Invoice (the page shows Recurring invoice). The list shows each template, its customer, its amount and how often it repeats. A template is not an invoice: it books nothing and takes nothing out of stock.

Invoices made from it
The invoices are made by the system on its schedule, not by anyone pressing a button. Each invoice is a credit invoice for the template's customer and lines, dated the day it is made, with the next number of the invoice series.
Common questions
When does an invoice made from a template reach the IRD?
Not the moment it is made. The scheduled retry sends it, normally within about an hour, as it does any bill still marked No (How bills reach the IRD, and what to check when one does not).
Which number series do the invoices take?
The first invoice series that is valid on the day the invoice is made, whichever branch it belongs to. In a company with several branches, check which branch's numbers the first invoices took (Document numbering for sales).
