The sales documents and how they link

A sale can pass through a quotation, an order, a delivery note and an invoice, and be corrected by a return. Each step is optional, and each can feed the next.

The chain

Quotation -> Order -> Goods delivery note -> Invoice -> Return

An order can also be invoiced without a delivery note, and an invoice can be raised with no earlier document.

Every step is optional. A shop that sells over the counter raises an invoice and nothing else. A business that quotes, takes orders and delivers in batches uses the whole chain. Each step can be started from the one before it, so nothing is typed twice (see From quotation to order, delivery note and invoice).
