The unit and the alternative unit
Every product has one Unit: the unit its stock is counted in (piece, kilogram, litre). A product may also have an Alt unit, a second unit you sometimes buy or sell in (dozen, carton).
Create the units once in Product unit (menu Inventory Setup › Unit, usual label): a Unit name, a Unit code (the short name) and Active. Then choose them on the product.
How the two units convert
The product form has two numbers, Unit QTY and Alt unit QTY. They say how much of one unit equals how much of the other.
| Example | Unit | Alt unit | Unit QTY | Alt unit QTY |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A dozen is 12 pieces | Piece | Dozen | 12 | 1 |
| A carton is 24 bottles | Bottle | Carton | 24 | 1 |
The alternative quantity is the quantity multiplied by the Alt unit QTY and divided by the Unit QTY: 24 pieces with 12 and 1 is 2 dozen. When you type a quantity on a document, Penahak works out the other and shows both.
Rules
- A product that has an Alt unit needs both Unit QTY and Alt unit QTY: "Provide values values for factor and conversion ratio".
- A document line for a product with an alt unit asks for the alternative quantity too: "You have set alt unit for this product so please provide alt quantity for this product." (an opening shows this message).
- Once a product has been used, Unit and Alt unit can no longer be changed (Products: what the stock side needs from a product).
- A unit that products use cannot be deleted: switch it off with Active.
Unbundling
Some products can be unbundled: a carton broken into pieces, which are a different product. That uses the Unbundling product fields on the product and the Bundle/unbundle screen (Bundling and unbundling products).
Common questions
Is the rate per bottle or per carton?
Per Unit, the bottle in the example. A supplier's price of 600 a carton is a rate of 25 a bottle (600 ÷ 24).
