Two calendars, one date
Nepal uses two calendars: AD (the Gregorian calendar) and BS (Bikram Sambat). Every sales document is saved with both dates, so reports and the IRD list show the same day in either calendar. Which one the screens show first is a company setting (Calendar name and Date format on the company record).
On the invoice, the Date field shows the company's calendar and a small note with the date in the other one.
Which dates you can pick
| Situation | Rule |
|---|---|
| New document | The date starts as today |
| An earlier date | Allowed, inside the active fiscal year |
| A date before the fiscal year starts | Refused: "The financial year for this transaction date has already been closed, so you are not allowed to make a transaction on this date." |
| A future date | Not offered on the invoice date field |
| Company has IRD on | The invoice and the sales return are dated today only. The field snaps back to today, and the system refuses any other date |
Common questions
Does the "today only" rule apply to orders and delivery notes too?
No. With IRD on, only the invoice and the sales return are held to today, and so is the approval of a provisional return (Provisional sales return, approved later). The other sales documents still cannot be dated before the fiscal year starts.
Can I enter last year's invoice after the new year has started?
Not once the new year is active: no document can be dated before its start. Enter the old year's late invoices, receipts and returns before you make the new year active (Start a new fiscal year).
Which date goes to the IRD?
The bill's BS date. With IRD on, that is always the day the invoice or return was saved (What IRD-ready means).
