Entering opening balances

Opening ledger balances and opening stock, and reconciling before you trade.

Openings are entered in two parts: ledger balances and stock. Both are dated, so the opening sits at the start of the fiscal year rather than being backdated arbitrarily.

Ledger openings

For each account, enter:

  • General ledger, and sub-ledger where the balance belongs to a specific customer or vendor.
  • Amount and amount type — which side of the entry it sits on.
  • Currency, where the balance is not in your base currency.
  • Opening voucher date in Bikram Sambat.

Stock openings

For each item, enter:

  • Product and godown — opening stock always belongs to a specific location.
  • Quantity, unit and rate. Where the item has one, the alternate quantity and alternate unit as well.
  • Opening date in Bikram Sambat.

Reconcile before you trade

  1. Enter all ledger and stock openings.
  2. Run the opening trial.
  3. Compare it line by line against your previous system’s closing trial balance.
  4. Confirm opening stock value agrees with your closing stock valuation.

Do not skip the reconciliation. An opening that does not agree makes every subsequent month’s figures unexplainable, and the problem gets harder to unpick the longer you trade on it.
