Penahak runs in any modern browser. The desktop application wraps the same interface and adds one thing the browser cannot do reliably: direct control of local hardware.
Platforms
- Windows — installer and portable builds (64-bit).
- macOS — disk image and archive builds, for both Intel and Apple silicon.
- Linux — AppImage and Debian package builds.
Why use it
- Thermal printing. Receipts and kitchen tickets print through the local bridge straight to the operating system printer, with no browser print dialog.
- Durable print jobs. The bridge polls for pending jobs, so a printer fault delays a ticket rather than losing it.
- Station mapping. Kitchen stations are mapped to physical printers on the machine running the bridge.
- Terminal identity. The machine is registered as a terminal, so sales and shifts attribute to a counter.
Where to use which
Use the desktop application on tills, kitchen and bar machines, and anywhere that drives a thermal printer. Use the browser for back office, management and reporting, where there is no hardware to talk to.
Mobile: the web application works in a mobile browser. A dedicated Android application with on-device thermal printing is in development and not yet released.
