Gift cards are sold as value up front and redeemed as a tender at the counter. Outstanding balance on issued cards is a liability, and it posts to the ledger you map for it.
Setting up a card
- Equivalent amount — the value the card carries.
- Expiry days — how long it remains valid from issue.
- Card description and active flag.
- Branch — where the card is issued.
The printed card
The card print layout is configurable, so the physical card carries your own branding rather than a generic template. You can set the company name and logo, branch address, phone and website, a business promotion message, social handles for Facebook and Instagram, and a copyright line. Cards can be reprinted if a print fails.
Redemption
At the counter a gift card is a tender like any other: it can settle a whole bill, part of a bill alongside cash or card, or the difference on a replacement, entered by gift card number.
Practical advice
- Decide the expiry period before you issue the first card. Changing it later does not change cards already out there.
- Watch the outstanding liability. Unredeemed gift cards are money you owe, not money you have earned.
- Keep the issuing branch accurate if branches settle separately.
